Service Learning Delegates to National 4-H Congress

For the third year, 4-H recognized a Level II 4-H'er who exhibited outstanding service learning efforts. This 4-H'er joined the Tennessee delegation to National 4-H Congress, November 26-30 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 2004 winner is Alishea Ziegler of Meigs County. Check out her accomplishments (along with those of the rest of the 2004 National Congress delegation) here.

At Look at 2004

In 2004, 4-H'ers have been very active in their communities. They've learned skills and increased their knowledge of many topics. Service learning was a part of several state events.

Delegates to State 4-H Congress collected items for the neonatal intensive care unit at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. They donated over 5000 items, including lotion, blankets, gowns, and diapers.

Beardsley Farm4-H'ers at Junior High Academic Conference spent an afternoon volunteering at several Knoxville agencies.

They helped out at the following agencies:

  • Angelic Ministries International: Beef Project
  • Baptist Center of Western Heights: Sheep Project
  • Beardsley Community Farm: Garden/Home Horticulture Project
  • Goodwill Industries: Consumer Education and Field Crops/Plant Science Projects
  • H.A.B.I.T.: Dog Project
  • Ijams Nature Center: Dairy and Petroleum Power Projects
  • Runaway Shelter: Swine Project
  • Second Harvest Food Bank: Dairy Foods/Food-Nutrition Project
  • S.T.A.R.: Horse Project

In April, 35 young leaders gathered for the Prudential Youth Leadership Institute. They spent three days increasing their leadership skills through service. They participated in activities such as a blind trust walk, the Johari Window, community mapping, "Traffic Jam," "Donation Relocation" and more. Learn more about the training and check out some great pictures here!

At 4-H Roundup and State All Star Conference, delegates collected items for foster children who are making the transition to independence. They donated items such as mops, towels, cleaning supplies, baby clothes, and other things these young men and women need to start their own homes. All Stars not involved in competition also spent a morning volunteering at seven Knoxville agencies. They worked at the following:

  • Angelic Ministries International
  • Howard Baker Center for Public Policy
  • Inskip Elementary School
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • Salvation Army Joy Baker Center
  • Vine Middle Magnet School
  • Wee Course at Williams Creek (First Tee Program)
