LEADERSHIP SERIES... PART FIVE

I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you another leadership activity that you can use with your 4-H members. This activity, entitled Gone Fishin'! - Time Management Resources, may be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/gonefishin.pdf.

No matter where you "are" in life, time management is a challenge. It seems like there are never enough hours in the day to accomplish all you want. Leaders are in high demand! Good management of time is essential to developing strong leadership skills and positive self-esteem. While there is no magic formula to time management, this activity provides a few resources to help participants better manage their time and priorities.

As a result of this activity, 4-H'ers will be better able to answer the following Positive Self Esteem life skills questions:

1. I believe I have the motivation, skills and perseverance to reach my life goals.
2. I have confidence in my ability to make good decisions.
3. I seek new and challenging life experiences.
4. I understand that I cannot be "the best" at everything.
5. I can identify my personal interests and strengths.

This activity was specifically designed for advanced level 4-H members. It works well for adult-level training as well. I hope you find the activity useful. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions, please contact me at lbelew@utk.edu or 865-974-7239.

STORYTELLING EVENT TO HONOR RALPH MEACHAM

Saturday, September 20, will mark the First Annual Ralph Meacham Story Tellin’ Event. Activities will take place from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m CDT at the Barn at Grace Chapel in Leiper’s Fork. Directions are available from www.GraceChapel.com.

This BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) event is being conducted as a tribute to Ralph Meacham. Ralph, a long-time 4-H volunteer and the official photographer for the Southern Region 4-H Volunteer Forum, who is battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In honor of Ralph and his contributions to 4-H, the 2008 SRVF service-learning project is developing an awareness and dollars to find a cure for ALS. This storytelling event is being conducted as part of the SRVF project.

Tickets are $5.00 each or $10.00 per family. There will be nationally and internationally known storytellers as well as 4-H members who will be showing off their singing talents, and some great door prizes to give away! Concessions will be provided.

WHAT IS AN ENDOWMENT?

Unlike a person's own investment accounts, endowments are typically set up for charitable purposes using donated funds. Because endowments serve a different function than that of personal or corporate investment accounts, the criteria by which they are managed must also be different.

Endowments are usually permanent, restricted, non-liquid accounts designed to provide an annual payout that may be expended for the purpose(s) for which the endowment was established. Donations can be added to the endowment's principle account. Expenditures are made from a separate expenditure account, which holds the payout monies awarded from the endowment principle account. Because endowments are largely made up of donated funds, they are managed by using lower risk investment options than private or corporate accounts.

In theory, once an endowment is established it will exist forever, providing funding as prescribed in the original memorandum of agreement through the payout of earnings generated by the investment of the principle account.

To view a state map of counties having endowments, go to 4hfoundation.tennessee.edu/endowmentstatus.html. For information on establishing an endowment for your program, contact Mark Gateley at mgateley@utk.edu.
