CHILDREN’S ART NEEDED FOR MILITARY FAMILY SUPPORT
Now that the new school year is about to begin, Kansas State University would like to request your help with obtaining children's art for use in a project to support isolated National Guard and Reserve families. Selections of art will be used in a series of video spots that will be released to public television stations in Kansas. These videos will also be available nationally to challenge communities across the country to support National Guard and Reserve families during and after deployment.
Selections of the art will also be included on a DVD for you that includes the videos, a program guide and handouts for use in schools, churches and communities in Tennessee. Selections of the art will be featured at the Kansas State University Beach Museum of Art from March 6 to May 22, 2009, concurrently with a national exhibition titled "The American Soldier: From the Civil War to the War in Iraq."
Visit www.onourbehalf.org for samples of some of the wonderful art that has already received. You can also find information on submitting art and a description of the awards for the best submissions. Just look under "Children's Art" on the Web site.
Art must be received prior to December 1, 2008, though earlier submissions are more likely to be used in the videos. For a small investment of your time, you can provide an exciting opportunity for children and parents in your state.

PB727 PROVIDES GUIDELINES FOR 2008 LAND JUDGING CONTESTS
Changes were proposed to the State Land Judging Guide (PB727) last year by several individuals and reviewed by University of Tennessee soil scientists and others. The results of that review were discussed during the state land judging committee meeting in April of 2008. The majority of those present thought the proposed changes were either not needed at this time or best not implemented due to concerns about the potential effects on the overall program. The committee agreed not to change the guidebook, but to form a sub-committee for future updating of the guide.
The State Land Judging Guide (PB727) is up-to-date at the present time and is the only valid guideline for our regional and state contests held during 2008. The guide may be downloaded by going to www.uteasternregion.org/4h/JUDGING/LANDJUDGING,%20PB727.pdf.

TENNESSEE 4-H'ERS EXCEL AT SOUTHERN REGIONAL HORSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tennessee 4-H horse members returned successful from the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships held in Lexington, Virginia, July 30-August 3. The Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships is a culmination of the top 4-H horses, riders and educational contest contestants from the 13 Southern states. Tennessee had 48 horse/rider combinations that competed this year. We also had delegates competing in all of educational contests including horse bowl, hippology, horse judging, public speaking, individual presentation and team presentation.
The week started off with the educational contests and saw Tennessee take top ten honors in all of the educational contest divisions. The Crockett County Horse Bowl team placed 2nd overall with Andy Cole having the 4th high individual score and Amber Futrell with 5th high. Madelyn and Jillian Bower from Knox County placed 2nd in the team presentation contest. Amber Futrell was 3rd with Andy Cole placing 10th in the individual presentation contest.
The Hippology team from Blount County placed 3rd with another team from Putnam County placing 6th. Wendy Mallette from Blount County was the 8th high overall individual and teammate Stacy Mallette was 9th high individual. The public speaking contest found Kimberly King from Loudon County in 5th place and Tory Bailey from Giles County in 9th place. The Wilson County 4-H horse judging team placed 7th overall with Audrey Joines being named the 3rd high individual overall.
Many of the horse show classes had well over 90 entries and Tennessee took top ten ribbons in most of these. Hannah Agee, Jessica Bennett, Alina Carter, Courtney Conner, Kara Lay and Elizabeth Poczubut all placed in the Western Division with up to 113 entries. Tiffany Bryant was 5th overall and Emily Bresee Bowers Cone, Erika Hodge and Tania Van Der Westhuizen all took home ribbons in the Hunter Division with up to 162 entries. Georgia Ralston was 6th overall and Dustin Giltnane was 7th overall in the Non-trotting Division. Ashlyn Avent, Devon Bieniek, Haley Bieniek, Ashley Brown, Blake Everett, Alyssa Fann, Ethan Giltnane, Macy Mitchell, Christian Mills, Christina Mills, Carlton Ralston and Aaryn Tarver all placed in the Non-Trotting Division with up to 40 entries. Megan Aiosa, Melanie Aiosa, Jessica Barker and Michelle Roessler all took home ribbons in the Saddle Seat Division out of 14 entries. Final numbers overall for the Southern Regional Championships were 378 horses, 359 youth showing and 201 youth in education competition. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors for their hard work and accomplishments.

TENNESSEE DELEGATES RETURN FROM N.I.C.E. CONFERENCE
Lindsey Rochelle from Hickman County and Joshua Moore from Warren County recently represented Tennessee at the 2008 National Institute on Cooperative Education (N.I.C.E.) Conference. The conference was held at the University of North Carolina - Asheville, July 27-30.
The conference provides delegates with a deeper understanding of cooperatives. Participants learned how cooperatives differ from other business forms and heard cooperative success stories in both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. Attendees also got to serve as managers of a simulated cooperative store, competing with other stores in their market area for sales and profit. These teams also analyzed case studies, developed their own student-run cooperative and participated in team-building and leadership development activities.
The closing session recognized teams that were top performers in various conference activities. Lindsey competed in the Youth Scholar Ambassador program and, after three rounds of judging and eliminations, was named the runner-up. As a result, she will attend the 2009 N.I.C.E. Conference to be held on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Lindsey and Joshua were selected for this honor as result of being state finalists in Level II citizenship and leadership competition at Tennessee 4-H Congress earlier this spring. Their trip was sponsored by the Tennessee Council of Cooperatives.
