4-H ALL STAR DAY OF SERVICE

4-H All-Stars attending Roundup as non-competitors enjoyed a “day of service” on Tuesday morning of Roundup. 75 4-H members and 10 volunteer leaders engaged in service learning activities throughout the city of Knoxville. 55 teens visited Beardsley Farms (www.beardsleyfarms.net) and 20 teens visited the Second Harvest Food Bank (www.secondharvestknox.org/). The 4-H members learned the significance of the 4-H All Star motto, “Service.” These 4-H members enjoyed volunteering at these local agencies and seeing the fruits of their labors.

While working at Beardsley Farms, the 4-H members were joined by the Knoxville News Sentinel and Channel 10 (WBIR) television. Each did a feature story on 4-H and our service projects. Click on the following links to check these stories out.

HOW TO MAKE A PAPER AIRPLANE ACTIVITY OFFERS YOUTH TRAINING IN LIFE SKILLS

“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” This adage suggests that we should spend more time listening to what is being said than talking. Likewise, when we communicate, we should also be very specific about what we are saying and never make assumptions that others will “know what we mean.”

Good listening skills and effective communication are essential to being a good leader. The purpose of the How to Make a Paper Airplane activity is to help participants gain awareness of and improve their personal communication and listening skills so that they can become more effective leaders. The How to Make a Paper Airplane activity can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/howtomakeapaperairplane.pdf.

As a result of this activity, 4-H’ers will be better able to answer the following Communications life skills questions:

1. I can understand and follow directions.
2. I am a better listener.
3. I can share my ideas through writing.

This activity was specifically designed for intermediate and advanced level 4-H members. It works well for adult-level training as well. I hope you find the activity useful. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions, please contact me at lbelew@utk.edu or 865-974-7239.

Three finalists who are senior 4-H members will be selected for the Career Pursuit activity. Each contest offers a $300 first place award, $200 second place award and a $100 third place award. REGISTER TODAY FOR 2008 SOUTHERN REGION VOLUNTEER FORUM

The deadline to register for the 2008 Southern Region Volunteer Forum is rapidly approaching! Registration is due August 13. After August 27, a $50.00 late fee will be charged. Participation in the forum is a great experience for volunteers and agents. It offers the opportunity to network with other states, exchange creative ideas and make new friends! It is an educational, motivational and cultural experience. Some of the special events include a "Holiday on the Bayou," Cajun dancing and a Mardi Gras ball. There will even be a mask making workshop to properly accent your costume!

Registration will be through SUPER this year. A registration form is provided on the Web site for volunteers and agents to complete. However, forms are to be returned to the county Extension office so delegates may be properly registered through SUPER. Agents will then forward the forms from their county to the state 4-H office with the registration fees. The state 4-H office cannot register volunteers in SUPER for this event. It can only be done through the county office. Following registration instructions will avoid delays in the process.

Louisiana is the host state for the 2008 Southern Region Volunteer Forum. As this year's theme implies, 4-H: A Taste for All will offer unique learning experiences, cultural exchange and fun for all.

The registration fee of $225.00 is the same as last year. This includes meals, lodging and a t-shirt. Additional fees apply for individuals who plan to arrive at the camp prior to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, to cover meals and lodging. This year, tickets will be issued for early meals. If you plan on arriving early, please make the proper selection on your registration form so the tickets can be requested.

The service project offers an opportunity for involvement from every county, even if you do not have delegates. The project, “Developing Dollars for a Cure,” focuses on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a terminal disease that strikes someone every 90 minutes. The project is in honor of one of our Tennessee delegates and the official forum photographer, Ralph Meacham. You can find details for the service project in the informational booklet on the Web site. It's a great opportunity to involve Honor Club and All Stars! If your county has an ALS office, they can supply information brochures and materials you can use to help with the service project.

Louisiana has created a great 22 page informational booklet full of information. To access this publication and the registration form go to 4h.tennessee.edu/volunteers/rockeagle/. If you have questions or concerns regarding the information in the packet, please contact Carmen Burgos by phone at 865-974-2128 or cburgos@utk.edu.

ROUNDUP GOES GREEN IN 2008

Thanks to everyone who contributed soft drink pull tabs for the 2008 State 4-H Roundup service project, “Pulling for Youth.” This service project allowed the Roundup delegation to not only contribute to the Ronald McDonald House, but to help save the environment through our 4-H All Star service theme, “Going Green in 2008.” 4-H’ers attending Roundup collected over 77,000 pull tabs. That’s enough pull tabs to stretch over 1.3 miles. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this worthwhile project.

You should have received a high quality JPEG photo of your state project winners, college scholarship recipients and Vol State recipients. These photos should be suitable for use in your local newspaper(s). If you would like to have a print, any photo developer should be able to make one from these files. Please contact me if you failed to receive a picture of any of your participants.
